Dear Participant,
On behalf of the Conference Committee it is my pleasure to invite you to the third Joint European Conference and Exhibition on Geographical Information to be held in Vienna on 16-18 April 1997.
Over the past few years we have seen dramatic changes in the political climate of Europe, and are now experiencing a real enthusiasm for the creation of an environment which allows for the free movement of peoples and possibilities for open competition across borders. The European geographical information community now has a major role to play in this evolution, retaining the rich European Gl heritage and respecting cultural differences but at the same time enabling the sharing of geographical data, promoting the interoperability of systems and procedures, and fostering collaborative ventures.
JEC-GI is unique, encompassing a major Gl exhibition and effectively three interlinked conferences organised by our sponsor organizations AM/FM International European Division, EGIS and UDMS. AM/FM focuses on the practical issues of Gl in utilities and telecommunications, EGIS focuses on technology and advanced academic applications and UDMS focuses on a range of Gl topics from regional government to large scale mapping. Add to this the support of EUROGI and an expected participation from all European backgrounds we look forward to hosting a truly European event.
Building on last year's success in Barcelona we shall once again be running special vendor sessions, allowing Gl vendors to present and demonstrate their latest products. Those attending these sessions effectively benefit from a crash course in state of the art Gl systems, with the opportunity to contrast and compare products, and of course to question the vendors.
We are moving into perhaps the most exciting era in the use of geographical information. From the very early days of map making, maps have been used to present much more than positional information and have very often been beautifully decorated, but now with the assistance of modern technology, map making is brought to your own desk top and maps themselves are becoming true multi-media experiences
However, despite the explosive technological age in which we live, we still depend upon each other to share practical experiences, to pool ideas and to advance knowledge. A conference like JEC-GI is a vehicle in this process, so whether you have practical experiences to share, new ideas to float or new products to exhibit we invite you most cordially to become an integral part of JEC-GI 97 in Vienna.
Located as it is in the heart of Europe we trust that Vienna, especially in springtime, will prove to be an attractive venue, and that JEC-GI 97 will play its part in uniting European Gl interests.
