The Technical Tours will take place on April 18, 1997 in the afternoon. The price of CHF 40,- per tour is based on a
minimum of 20 participants and the organisers reserve the right to cancel the tour if there is an
insufficient number of participants.
Technical Tour I
Federal Office of Metrology and Surveying, Mapping Division
The Mapping Division of the Federal Office of Metrology and Surveying has the legal obligation to
establish the nationwide topographic and cartographic infrastructure. Data capture by remote sensing
and digital photogrammetric methods and production of digital orthophoto maps are one of the
cornerstones of the Mapping Division. As a sound base for the GIS user community setting up
topographic and cartographic data bases covering all over Austria and their continuous upgrading and
updating programmes are further activities. In conclusion the mapping division presents production lines
and facilities of its photogrammetric, topographic, cartographic and map reproduction departments under
the view of modern visualization techniques.
Meeting point: Austria Center - 14:00 h -
Technical Tour II
Federal Office of Metrology and Surveying, Division of Cadastre, Control and Survey and
State Borders
The Division of Cadastre, Control and Survey and State Borders has established data bases of real
estates to provide the GIS world for various purposes and has completed a nationwide computer-aided
information network. The Digital Cadastral Map is in stage of nationwide data capture and will be repre-
sented by appropriate information technology, also structured as a base of a Land Infommation System.
The ongoing control survey programmes are carried out with application of the Global Positioning
System and its technology, astro-geodetic work and gravimetry. All results of primary data acquisition,
investigation and adjustment of various network measurements and configured models (geoid, mass
model) are stored in data bases for convenient access. The Division of Cadastre, Control Survey and
State Borders presents an overview of the possible combination of different data according to setting up
digital complex databases. Furthermore, during the presentation the stress is laid on the methods of
upgrading, actualization and extension of the information modules.
Meeting point: Austria Center - 14:00 h-
Technical Tour III
Network Information System (NIS) of the Water Company of Vienna
Vienna's water supply is famous for his high quality. Springs in the Alps are collected and the water is
brought to the metropolitan area by long distance pipelines. Die Wiener Wasserwerke (The Water
Company of Vienna) installed a network information system (NIS) for the urban distribution network to
improve the fault-clearing service in case of a leak, to scan the quality of the pipes and to give better
monitoring to the switchboard controlling network. The link of the NIS to fundamental GIS databases of
the city improves maintenance and customer support. Together with the automated mapping facilities
the NIS represents a versatile AM/FM system.
Meeting point: Austria Center - 14:00 h -
Technical Tour IV
Information Centre of the Municipality of Vienna: GIS Facilities
In the last decade the City of Vienna has built up a comprehensive GIS infrastructure based on
commonly used GIS databases (topography, general reference systems, real estate Cadastre and
zoning regulations) accessible by a network. Applications of several departments make use of
interdisciplinary data exchange and contribute to corporate geo-data maintenance. In the course of this
excursion several applications of urban information systems will be demonstrated, e.g. corporate
underground utility cadastre, real estate Cadastre of the municipality, street management systems,
emergency information systems for the fire brigade, GIS based Intranet applications.
Meeting point: Austria Center - 14:00 h -
Technical Tour V
Wiener Stadtvermessung (City of Vienna, Surveying Department)
This municipal department focuses on surveying with regard to the large construction sites and
municipal property as well as on the production of the digital city map. In the course of the visit
especially the computer assisted techniques and equipment for data capture by tachometry and
photogrammetry will be presented.
Meeting point: Austria Center - 14:00 h -
Technical Tour VI
GIS Use at Wienstrom for Network Documentation, Planning and Operation
In 1994 Wienstrom launched the conversion of the maps of its electric network for graphic data processing. Three geographic reference systems are available; The digital cadastral map,
the multipurpose map of Vienna and a schematic reference system of street axis and identification numbers of buildings,
prepared by Wienstrom's survey department. The data base of the electric network does not only comprise electric lines, but also switchable network connections. As unique keys for adresses are used, network data
can be linked with data from the customer information system. Data collection will be shown on UNIX workstations. It will be demonstrated how circuit diagrams of transformer stations are generated, and loadflow and short circuit calculation based on these data will be carried out.
Meeting point: Austria Center - 14:00 h -
